Portrait of a Lady in a Black (c.1921), Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. Oil on canvas, 76.5 x 63.5 cms.
This painting marks a development in Cadell’s style, which occurred in the 1920s. The feathery and complex brushwork of earlier paintings is abandoned in favour of a flatter more geometric composition, and an increasing interest in monolithic blocks of colour.
